BVAC/VIBE Pathway to Veterinary Medicine Bursary for Black Students

The Black Veterinary Association of Canada (BVAC), Veterinary professionals Instilling Black Excellence (VIBE) and their partners, VetStrategy and Vetalytix, are committed to building an inclusive and diverse veterinary community in Canada — community which supports and reflects the communities in which we live and serve.

To attain this goal, the partnership between BVAC, VIBE, VetStrategy and Vetalytix will help to finance and support Black-identifying high school, college or university students who intend to apply for admission into veterinary medicine or veterinary technician programs. The financial assistance will be provided in the form of one-time bursary which will be awarded to individuals selected from the pool of applicants.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be enrolled at or recently graduated from a Canadian high school, non-veterinary program in a college or university.

  • Demonstrate an enthusiasm for the profession and an intent to seek entry into a veterinary medicine or veterinary technician program.

  • Be a Black-identifying citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

BVAC and VIBE members and employees of VetStrategy and Animalytix, as well their immediate family members, are not eligible for the bursary.

Eligible Institution

Applicants must be enrolled in a high school, college or Canadian university which has provincially recognized degree-granting powers.

University/College Category:

Three winners will be selected from applicants who intend to enroll in a DVM program who are currently enrolled in or who have recently completed a university degree program.

The first-place winner will receive a bursary of at $1,500, the second-placed winner will receive a bursary of $1,000 and the third-place winner will receive a bursary of $500.

High School Category:

Three winners will be selected from applicants who are currently seeking admission to veterinary technician program or veterinary medicine program.

The first-place winner will receive a bursary of $1,000 the second winner will receive a bursary of $750 and the third, a bursary of $500.

Eligibility

Successful Applicants

Successful applicants will receive confirmation of their bursary in Spring 2024. Recipients will be required to forward any required documentation such as proof of registration from the institution they will be attending. Each winner will also receive a plaque and certificate which acknowledge their excellence.

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  •  Relevant volunteer/community involvement and/or extracurricular activities.

  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of veterinary medicine and animal welfare.

  • Quality and relevance of the essays.

All applications will be reviewed by a committee composed of VetStrategy employees, VIBE Members and BVAC members.

Number, Value and Duration of Bursaries

Payment

At the sole discretion of BVAC, payments of the bursaries will be credited to the successful applicants via cheque or electronic deposit.

Selection Process

Application Process

The student is considered the owner of the application and must be eligible for the bursary according to the program guidelines.

  1. Submit a completed online application by visiting www.bvac.ca/bursary-application

  2. If applicant is under 18 years of age, a legal guardian must co-sign the application form.

Following submission, a confirmation email will be sent to the applicant from info@bvac.ca.

Key Dates

Online applications must be submitted by April 15, 2024. The deadline may be extended at the discretion of the organizers.

Applicants will be required to answer two essay question and upload a current curriculum vitae (CV) via the online application process.
